I've been playing with another candidate for the definition of religion. I think I'm just settling for a flatly arbitrary definition: religions are what people say they are. There's just a box, within which are religions, and without which are not. No resorting to descriptive definitions or abstract criteria, no niggling over whether cults or personal creeds or fictional movie faiths are religions. The old men get grandfathered in, and the rest have to fight for acceptance.
