You don't have to call anyone or go to any Gurdwara (Sikh temple)to be a Sikh if you don't want to. Here are a few websites that may help and especially being from a western background, you may be more comfortable around Sikhs from Western background since many newcomers feel bored or lost in Sikh temples from Indian/Punjabi backgrounds because of cultural and language barriers.

That being nervous about calling strangers thing? It's totally perfectly completely normal. Dare I tell you how many years I was the person who picked up the phone to call for pizza because everyone else in the room was too socially awkward?

Practice really helps. Practice either in a mirror or, you know, doing it on the phone.

From what I understand the community is very welcoming.
